Description

Shadows of the Forest is a single-player, third-person survival horror game developed by Hollow Grove Studios and released in 2023. The game is set in the fictional, perpetually twilight Blackwood National Forest, where the player character, a park ranger named Elias Vance, becomes trapped after a helicopter crash. The primary objective is to survive for seven in-game nights while navigating a dense, procedurally generated woodland environment. The forest is inhabited by a single, unkillable entity known as the Wraith, a shadowy humanoid figure that patrols the map. The game features no combat; the player must rely on stealth, resource management, and environmental puzzles to progress. Key resources include batteries for a flashlight, fuel for a portable generator, and medicinal herbs for health restoration. The game employs a dynamic AI system for the Wraith, which learns player patterns and adapts its patrol routes over successive nights. The narrative is delivered through found audio logs and environmental storytelling, revealing the forest’s history as a site of a 1970s cult disappearance.

Instructions

Gameplay mechanics center on a cycle of exploration, evasion, and objective completion. Each night lasts 20 minutes of real time. The player must locate three specific items—a radio antenna piece, a fuel canister, and a map fragment—hidden in randomized locations across four distinct zones: the Clearing, the Ruins, the Creek Bed, and the Hollow. These items are required to repair a radio tower for rescue. The Wraith spawns at a random map edge at nightfall and moves toward the player’s last known location. It cannot be killed; direct contact results in an instant death and a restart of the current night.

Operation controls are mapped to a standard keyboard and mouse or controller. The W key moves forward, S moves backward, and A and D strafe left and right. The left mouse button activates the flashlight, which drains battery power. The right mouse button triggers a crouch, reducing movement noise and visibility. The spacebar initiates a sprint, which depletes stamina and generates significant sound. The E key interacts with objects, such as picking up items or opening cabin doors. The Tab key opens the inventory, where items can be selected and combined. The Q key uses a equipped health herb. The F key deploys a decoy flare, which attracts the Wraith to its location for 15 seconds.

Tactical techniques involve managing sound and light. The player should avoid sprinting on dry leaves or gravel, as these surfaces produce the highest noise levels. Crouching on grass or dirt is silent. The flashlight should be used in short bursts to conserve batteries; the Wraith is attracted to sustained light sources. A core technique is the “shadow loop”: the player can lure the Wraith to a decoy flare, then sprint to the opposite zone to retrieve an item, as the entity takes 30 seconds to disengage from a flare. Another technique is “herb stacking,” where consuming two herbs in quick succession provides a temporary 10-second speed boost. The player should always maintain a line of sight to a hiding spot, such as a hollow log or dense bush, as the Wraith cannot detect players who remain motionless and unlit for more than five seconds.
