Retro Speed is a racing video game developed by Pixel Forge Studios and released in 2023 for PC and console platforms. The game is a deliberate homage to the sprite-based, top-down racing titles of the late 1980s and early 1990s, such as Super Off Road and RC Pro-Am. It features a 16-bit visual aesthetic with pixel art graphics, a chiptune soundtrack, and a fixed overhead camera perspective. The core gameplay loop involves competing against up to three AI opponents on a series of closed-circuit tracks. Each track is designed with distinct surface types, including asphalt, gravel, and ice, which directly affect vehicle traction and handling. The game includes a single-player championship mode, a time trial mode, and a local four-player split-screen multiplayer mode. Vehicle performance is determined by three upgradeable statistics: acceleration, top speed, and grip. Players earn currency based on race placement, which is used to purchase upgrades between races.

Gameplay mechanics are centered on momentum-based physics and precise cornering. The player controls a vehicle that accelerates and decelerates with a fixed rate, and turning speed is reduced while the vehicle is moving at high velocity. Collisions with track walls or other vehicles result in a brief loss of control and a reduction in speed. Each race consists of three laps, and the player must finish in first, second, or third place to progress in championship mode. The game features a power-up system where icons appear on the track. Collecting a green icon provides a temporary speed boost, a blue icon repairs a small amount of vehicle durability, and a red icon deploys an oil slick behind the vehicle to hinder opponents.

Operation controls are standardized across all platforms. The directional pad or analog stick controls steering. The A button (or cross button on PlayStation) activates acceleration. The B button (or circle button) activates braking and reverse. The X button (or square button) deploys the currently held power-up. The Y button (or triangle button) triggers a short, limited-use nitro boost, which is recharged by driving over specific track segments marked with yellow chevrons. The start button pauses the game and opens the options menu.

Tactical techniques focus on managing speed through corners. The most effective method is the "lift-and-turn" technique, where the player releases the acceleration button briefly before a turn, steers into the apex, and then re-engages acceleration at the exit. Braking is generally reserved for sharp hairpin turns, as it significantly reduces momentum. Power-ups should be deployed strategically: oil slicks are most effective on narrow sections of track or immediately before a corner to force opponents into the wall. The nitro boost is best saved for long straightaways to maximize its duration and speed advantage. Vehicle upgrades should prioritize grip first, as improved traction reduces the need for braking and allows for faster cornering speeds.
