Description

Hop Hop is a single-player or local multiplayer platform game developed by the independent studio BrainBox Games, first released in 2018 for PC and mobile platforms. The game is set in a series of vertically scrolling, procedurally generated environments composed of floating platforms, moving obstacles, and collectible items. The player controls a small, round character that moves by hopping between surfaces, with the primary objective being to ascend as high as possible without falling into the void below. The game features a minimalist visual style with flat colors and simple geometric shapes, and its soundtrack consists of a looping, upbeat electronic track. Each session begins from a fixed starting point, and the player’s score is determined by the maximum height reached, with bonus points awarded for collecting gems and performing consecutive hops without touching the ground. The game includes a local two-player mode where two characters share the same screen, competing to reach the highest altitude while potentially interfering with each other’s movement.

Instructions

Gameplay mechanics in Hop Hop are based on momentum and timing. The character automatically hops in a fixed arc when the player initiates a jump, and the direction of the hop is determined by the character’s current horizontal velocity. The player cannot control the character’s movement while airborne; only the timing of the next hop can be adjusted. Platforms are static or moving horizontally, and some platforms disappear after a single contact. The game ends when the character falls off the bottom of the screen or collides with a spiked obstacle.

Controls for the PC version use the keyboard. The spacebar or the up arrow key initiates a hop. The left and right arrow keys adjust the character’s horizontal lean before a hop, influencing the trajectory. Holding a direction key while pressing the jump key results in a longer, angled hop. On mobile devices, the player taps the left or right side of the screen to lean, and taps the center to jump. In local multiplayer, Player 1 uses the arrow keys and spacebar, while Player 2 uses the W, A, S, D keys and the left Shift key for jumping.

Tactical techniques include leaning into the direction of a moving platform before hopping to maintain forward momentum. Players can perform a “double tap” by pressing the jump key twice in rapid succession to execute a short, vertical hop, useful for landing on narrow platforms. To maximize height, players should aim for consecutive hops onto moving platforms that ascend, as stationary platforms provide no upward boost. Collecting gems increases the score multiplier for a limited time, encouraging risky jumps toward gem clusters. In multiplayer, a player can intentionally land on top of an opponent’s character to push them downward, causing a potential fall.
