Description

Haaland Funny Face is a digital party game developed by independent studio Oddball Interactive, released in 2024 for PC and mobile platforms. The game centers on a single-player or local multiplayer challenge where the player controls a caricature of footballer Erling Haaland, whose facial expressions must be manipulated in real-time to match randomly generated prompts. The objective is to score points by accurately replicating a series of comedic or exaggerated facial poses, such as a wide-eyed stare, a grimacing smile, or a confused frown, within a strict time limit. The game features a minimalist art style with a bright color palette and a single static background depicting a football pitch. No narrative or progression system exists beyond accumulating high scores across successive rounds. The game is designed for short, repetitive play sessions.

Instructions

Gameplay mechanics operate on a prompt-and-response system. Each round, the game displays a target expression name, such as "Surprise" or "Disgust," alongside a timer bar. The player must manipulate the character's face to match the prompt using a combination of discrete control inputs. On PC, the controls are mapped to the keyboard: the W, A, S, and D keys adjust the eyebrows (raised, lowered, furrowed, neutral). The arrow keys control the mouth: Up for a wide open mouth, Down for a tight closed mouth, Left for a leftward smirk, and Right for a rightward smirk. The spacebar toggles the eyes between open and squinted. On mobile, on-screen sliders and buttons replicate these functions. A successful match is registered when the facial configuration falls within a predefined tolerance zone for the target expression for a continuous 0.5 seconds. A correct match awards 100 points, with a 50-point bonus if completed within the first two seconds of the timer. An incorrect match or a timeout results in zero points for that round and a 10-second penalty before the next prompt appears.

Tactical techniques focus on speed and memorization. Players should memorize the exact key combinations for each of the eight core expressions, as trial-and-error during the timer is inefficient. For example, the "Angry" expression requires lowered eyebrows (S key), squinted eyes (spacebar), and a tight closed mouth (Down arrow). A common technique is to pre-position the eyebrows and eyes before the prompt appears, as these are the slowest to adjust. The mouth is the fastest control and should be adjusted last. In local multiplayer mode, players alternate turns, and the highest cumulative score after ten rounds wins. No power-ups or modifiers exist. The only advanced technique involves deliberately failing a difficult prompt to reset the timer faster, as the penalty is shorter than the time lost attempting a complex expression.
