Description

Dragon Funtion is a single-player action-platformer released in 1991 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Developed by a small Japanese studio, the game places the player in control of a young dragon tasked with reclaiming a stolen elemental crystal from a sorcerer. The game features eight side-scrolling levels, each themed around a different environment such as volcanic caverns, ice peaks, and floating ruins. The dragon can breathe fire and perform a short glide by holding the jump button. Health is represented by a heart meter, and continues are limited. The game is noted for its moderate difficulty and pixel-art style.

Instructions

Gameplay mechanics center on precise platforming and enemy management. The dragon moves left or right using the D-pad. The A button initiates a jump; holding A after the jump activates a slow descent glide, which is essential for crossing wide gaps. The B button fires a fireball in the direction the dragon faces. Fireballs can be charged by holding B for two seconds, releasing a larger, more damaging shot that can break certain walls. The Start button pauses the game; Select has no function.

Tactical techniques include using the glide to hover over enemies, allowing the dragon to land on them safely. Charged fireballs are recommended against armored foes and bosses, as standard fireballs deal reduced damage. Players should memorize enemy spawn patterns, as many appear from off-screen. Collecting small gems increases the score, while large gems restore one heart. Each level contains a hidden key that unlocks a bonus room at the end of the stage, granting extra lives. Boss fights require pattern recognition: most bosses telegraph attacks with a visual cue, such as a flash or a pause, before striking.
