Description

Don't Get Caught! is a stealth-based multiplayer party game developed by a small independent studio and released in 2023. The game pits a single player, designated the Seeker, against a group of Hiders within a procedurally generated indoor environment. The objective for the Hiders is to evade visual detection by the Seeker for a timed round, while the Seeker must tag all Hiders before time expires. The game features a cartoonish art style with exaggerated character proportions and a top-down perspective. Environments include rooms, corridors, and furniture that can be used for concealment. The game supports up to eight players locally or online.

Instructions

Gameplay mechanics are turn-based with a countdown phase. At round start, Hiders have ten seconds to find a hiding spot. The Seeker is confined to a starting room during this phase. Once the phase ends, the Seeker moves freely. The Seeker tags a Hider by making physical contact. Tagged Hiders are eliminated and become spectators. The round ends when all Hiders are tagged or the timer reaches zero. If any Hider remains untagged, the Hiders win the round.

Operation controls are identical for all players. Movement is controlled with the WASD keys. The Seeker uses the left mouse button to perform a short-range "scan" that reveals Hiders within a small radius for two seconds. The scan has a cooldown of eight seconds. Hiders can use the spacebar to "hold breath," which reduces their visibility radius to the Seeker by fifty percent but slows their movement speed by thirty percent. The E key allows Hiders to interact with objects, such as opening closets or moving behind curtains. The shift key enables a sprint for both roles, limited by a stamina bar that depletes in three seconds and recharges in five seconds.

Tactical techniques include the Seeker using scans at chokepoints like doorways. Hiders should avoid staying in the same spot for more than fifteen seconds, as the Seeker can memorize common hiding locations. Hiders can use the hold breath ability when the Seeker is within three tiles to avoid detection. The Seeker benefits from patrolling the perimeter of the map to flush Hiders toward the center.
