Description

Clever Crow is a single-player puzzle game developed by Studio Flatline and released in 2023 for PC and mobile platforms. The game is set in a minimalist, hand-drawn environment where the player controls a crow navigating a series of increasingly complex environmental puzzles. The core objective is to retrieve a stolen key from a fox by manipulating objects, activating mechanisms, and solving logic-based challenges across 60 levels. The game emphasizes spatial reasoning and sequential planning, with no combat or time limits. Each level presents a self-contained diorama where the crow must interact with levers, blocks, ropes, and pressure plates to create a path to the key. The visual style uses muted colors and simple shapes, with ambient sound effects that change based on the crow’s actions. The game includes a hint system that provides incremental guidance without revealing full solutions. Clever Crow has been noted for its non-linear difficulty curve and the absence of text-based instructions, relying entirely on visual cues and trial-and-error learning.

Instructions

Gameplay mechanics are based on a grid-based movement system. The crow occupies one tile at a time and can move in four cardinal directions. The player must push or pull certain objects, such as wooden crates or stone blocks, to bridge gaps or block hazards. Some objects are immovable and require the crow to activate switches or rotate gears to reposition them. Each level contains a single key that must be collected to unlock the exit. The fox, the antagonist, patrols a fixed path and will reset the level if it touches the crow. The fox cannot be defeated; avoidance is the only option.

Operation controls differ by platform. On PC, the arrow keys or WASD control movement. The spacebar performs an action, such as picking up a small object or pressing a button. Holding the spacebar while moving allows the crow to drag a movable object. On mobile, a virtual joystick on the left side of the screen controls movement, and a tap on the right side triggers the action. A two-finger swipe rotates the camera view in certain levels. The pause menu is accessed via the escape key on PC or a dedicated button on mobile.

Tactical techniques include planning moves in reverse, starting from the key location and working backward to the crow’s starting position. The player should identify which objects are movable and which are fixed before attempting any sequence. The fox’s patrol pattern can be observed for two full cycles to predict safe windows for crossing. Objects that emit a faint glow can be used as weights on pressure plates. In levels with multiple switches, the order of activation is critical; a wrong sequence resets the switch state. The crow can stand on top of crates to reach higher ledges, but crates cannot be stacked more than two high. The hint system, accessed by pressing H on PC or a question mark icon on mobile, reveals the next single action required but does not show the full solution.
