Description

Block Tree is a single-player puzzle-strategy video game developed by Nodding Tree Games and released in 2023 for PC and mobile platforms. The game presents a vertical, procedurally generated tree composed of colored blocks. The player’s objective is to remove all blocks from the tree by matching groups of three or more adjacent blocks of the same color. The tree grows upward in stages, and each stage introduces new block colors and structural complexities. The game ends when the tree’s root structure collapses due to excessive block removal or when the player fails to clear a stage within a limited number of moves. Block Tree features a minimalist visual style with a muted color palette and a dynamic soundtrack that changes based on the player’s progress. The game includes a leaderboard system for comparing completion times and move counts.

Instructions

Gameplay mechanics are based on a gridless adjacency system. Blocks are arranged in a branching pattern, and each block is connected to up to four neighbors: above, below, left, and right. A match is formed when three or more same-colored blocks are connected orthogonally. Removing a matched group causes all blocks above the removed group to fall downward, potentially creating new matches in a cascade. The player has a limited number of moves per stage, displayed in the upper-left corner. Each removal counts as one move. If the player runs out of moves before clearing all blocks, the stage is lost. Special blocks appear after stage five: a bomb block that removes all adjacent blocks when matched, and a wild block that matches any color.

Operation controls differ by platform. On PC, the player uses a mouse cursor to click on a single block within a valid matching group. The group is highlighted upon hover. Clicking removes the entire highlighted group. On mobile, the player taps a block to select the group, then taps a confirmation button to remove it. A two-finger tap cancels the selection. Keyboard shortcuts on PC include the R key to restart the current stage and the M key to toggle the soundtrack.

Tactical techniques focus on move conservation and cascade planning. The player should prioritize removing blocks from the lower sections of the tree first, as this causes the largest number of blocks to fall and increases the chance of chain reactions. Matching groups of four or five blocks is more efficient than matching groups of three, as it removes more blocks per move. The player should avoid removing isolated blocks that do not create new matches, as this wastes moves. Bomb blocks should be matched only when surrounded by at least two other blocks of the same color to maximize their blast radius. Wild blocks are best saved for late-stage cleanup when only a few colors remain. The player should also monitor the tree’s root stability; removing blocks directly above a root node can cause the entire upper structure to detach and fall, which may clear large sections in a single move.
