Description
BlackenedSun is a single-player, top-down survival horror game developed by Iron Veil Studios and released in 2023. The game is set in the fictional, perpetually eclipsed city of Umbra, where a catastrophic event known as the "Blackening" has corrupted the sun, turning it into a dark orb that emits a lethal, reality-warping radiation. The player controls a character known as the "Lamplighter," a scavenger equipped with a specialized lantern that serves as both a light source and a defensive tool. The primary objective is to navigate the procedurally generated districts of Umbra, collect "Sun Shards" to power a central beacon, and survive encounters with hostile entities known as "Shades." The game features a persistent day-night cycle, though "day" is defined by periods of low radiation and "night" by high radiation and increased Shade activity. Resources are scarce, and the environment is destructible, allowing for tactical breaches and barricading. The narrative is delivered through environmental storytelling, audio logs, and cryptic messages left by previous inhabitants.
Instructions
Gameplay mechanics center on resource management and environmental interaction. The player's lantern has a finite fuel gauge that depletes over time and when used offensively. Fuel is found in canisters throughout the city. The lantern can emit a focused beam to temporarily stun Shades or a wide pulse to repel them at a higher fuel cost. The player has a health bar and a radiation meter; exposure to the open sky during high-radiation periods increases the radiation meter, causing damage if it reaches maximum. Shelters, marked by blue doors, provide safe zones for healing and saving progress. The game uses a checkpoint system at these shelters.
Operation controls are as follows: the left analog stick or W, A, S, D keys control movement. The right analog stick or mouse controls the direction of the lantern beam. The right trigger or left mouse button activates the focused beam. The left trigger or right mouse button activates the wide pulse. The A button or spacebar performs a dodge roll, which has a short cooldown. The B button or E key interacts with objects, such as opening doors or picking up items. The Y button or Tab key opens the inventory menu, where items can be combined or used. The X button or Q key cycles through equipped items.
Tactical techniques include using the dodge roll to avoid Shade attacks, which are telegraphed by a red glow. Players should conserve fuel by using the wide pulse only when surrounded. Breaking windows or weak walls with the lantern pulse can create escape routes or lure Shades into traps, such as exposed electrical panels. During high-radiation periods, movement should be limited to indoor areas or routes with overhead cover. Combining a Sun Shard with a fuel canister creates a "Flare Bomb," which temporarily blinds all Shades in a large radius. Prioritizing the collection of audio logs provides map fragments, revealing hidden supply caches.
