Description
Battle Wheels is a vehicular combat game released in 1993 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Developed by Software Creations, it features top-down, single-screen arena battles between armed wheeled vehicles. The game supports up to four players via a multitap adapter, with a single-player tournament mode against computer opponents. Each vehicle is equipped with a primary weapon and a limited supply of secondary weapons, including mines and homing missiles. The objective is to destroy all opposing vehicles by depleting their health bars. Arenas contain obstacles such as walls and pits, which can also damage vehicles. The game is notable for its split-screen display in multiplayer, where each player’s view is confined to a quadrant of the screen.
Instructions
Gameplay operates in real-time on a single static arena. Each player controls a vehicle using the D-pad for movement in eight directions. The A button fires the primary weapon forward. The B button deploys a mine behind the vehicle. The X button launches a homing missile, which tracks the nearest opponent. The Y button activates a temporary speed boost. The L and R buttons rotate the vehicle left and right, allowing precise aiming without changing movement direction. Tactical techniques include using walls to block homing missiles, laying mines in narrow corridors, and employing speed boosts to dodge incoming fire. Players can also perform a “slide” by pressing the D-pad in the opposite direction while moving, which allows sharp turns. Effective use of the rotation buttons enables firing while retreating. In single-player mode, computer opponents exhibit predictable patterns, such as favoring direct pursuit, which can be exploited by laying mines in their path.
