Description

Batrix is a single-player puzzle-action game developed by independent studio Nullpointer Interactive and released in 2023. The game is set within a procedurally generated, grid-based digital environment referred to as the Matrix. The player controls a small, spherical entity called a Batrix, which must navigate through a series of increasingly complex chambers. The primary objective is to collect energy nodes scattered across each level while avoiding or neutralizing hostile programs known as Glitches. The game combines elements of classic arcade maze games with modern physics-based movement and resource management. Each level is completed when the Batrix reaches the designated exit portal, provided all required energy nodes have been collected. The game features a minimalist visual style with a monochromatic color palette accented by neon highlights, and a dynamic soundtrack that responds to player actions.

Instructions

Gameplay mechanics are centered on momentum and energy conservation. The Batrix moves continuously once set in motion and can only change direction or stop by interacting with walls or special tiles. The player must manage a limited energy meter, which depletes when the Batrix accelerates or collides with Glitches. Energy is restored by collecting nodes or passing over recharge pads. Glitches appear in three variants: static Spikes, patrolling Drones, and adaptive Mimics that copy the Batrix’s movement pattern. The player must plan routes to avoid or lure Glitches into traps, such as energy-draining fields or destructible walls.

Operation controls are keyboard-based. The W, A, S, and D keys apply directional thrust to the Batrix. Pressing the Spacebar activates a short-duration shield that negates one Glitch collision but consumes a significant portion of energy. The Shift key toggles a slow-motion mode, allowing precise navigation at the cost of continuous energy drain. The R key resets the Batrix to the last checkpoint without restarting the entire level. Mouse input is not used.

Tactical techniques include using the environment to build momentum before entering narrow corridors, as the Batrix retains speed when bouncing off walls. Players should prioritize collecting energy nodes in a circular pattern to maintain a full meter for emergencies. Against Mimics, the player can exploit their delayed reaction by abruptly changing direction near a trap tile. For levels with multiple Drones, the slow-motion mode is best used to time passes between their patrol cycles. Recharge pads should be used sparingly, as they become inactive for a short cooldown period after each use.
